2001, Morewood Wins

With a considerable lack of engineering experience, Patrick interrogates any engineer who will listen. There are no suspension frame builders in the country, so he scans bike magazines to see how to build the jigs needed to weld a frame together. His first design, a linkage type, evolves to the single pivot, a format Morewood bikes would become known for.

A steady run of prototypes emerges, with Pat machining almost every component on an ordinary Milling machine and centre-lathe in his spare time. This was the beginning of the Prime8". After cracking a few swingarms in the early stages, those bikes evolved into the current layout of the Prime8". This was the first year Morewood had a team, consisting of two riders: Duane Stander and Morewood himself. Duane goes on to win the South African title.

The theory "Win on Sunday sell on Monday" starts to materialise as Patrick begins taking the first orders. At the last race of the season he meets Richard Carter, who becomes his business partner and friend. Carter’s interest and belief in Morewood sealed the partnership and Morewood Engineering is born
